Yellowstone Spin-Off 1923: Where to watch, release date, trailer, cast and everything else you need to know
Yellowstone’s epic second prequel is now in production. John Dutton’s relatives are Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren in the 1923 Paramount+ premiere on December 18. Another “Yellowstone origin story” by Taylor Sheridan has been produced. It follows another family of Duttons as they struggle to survive in the rugged Mountain West, as outsiders strive to conquer their land. The story takes place 40 years after the events of 1883. Someone is constantly trying to take their land! The only place to watch the show is on Paramount+.
Here’s everything we currently know about 1923, including the premiere date, the actors, how to watch, and what to expect from the current generation of the Dutton family.
Latest news
Taylor Sheridan claimed in an interview with Deadline that 1923 is one of the most expensive TV shows ever produced. He claimed that 1923 is “much more expensive” than 1883, which he described as “the most expensive first season of a TV show ever filmed”. (Sheridan is exaggerating when he claims that 1883 had the “most expensive first season”; the first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, including the cost of the streaming rights, is known to have cost about $1 billion.)
Sheridan claimed that the dedication to accuracy is what makes 1923 so pricey. The program spends a lot of money on the thousands of cattle it uses. African shooting is also not acceptable. Do you know how difficult it is, with all the restrictions and politics, to move a crew in Africa in 2022 with Covid? Sheridan stated. “We were in [three] African nations. It’s not like we’ve just visited a small South African reserve.” Sheridan estimates that the cost of each episode ranges from $30 to $35 million, bringing the total cost of the show’s 16 episodes to about $240 million.
Hopefully, Paramount will recoup some of those costs. Variety claims the 1923 premiere drew 7.4 million people through linear broadcast and streaming, making it Paramount+’s most successful debut to date. In contrast, 10.3 million people watched the Yellowstone Season 5 premiere, which airs on a cable network (Paramount Network) as opposed to a paid streaming service.
Yellowstone prequel 1923 review
In his review of the 1923 debut of the series for TV Guide, Liam Mathews called it “a big project with enormous potential that will give Yellowstone fans a series that sometimes feels familiar and sometimes feels like it’s stretching what Yellowstone can be.” View the article.
Yellowstone prequel 1923 premise
The spin-off, initially titled 1932 before the creators changed the year it is set in, takes place during the Prohibition era after World War I, with Montana heading into economic collapse before the Great Depression. This places the story about 40 years after the events of 1883 and about 30 or 35 years before the birth of Kevin Costner’s character, John Dutton III.
“1923 focuses on the next two generations of the Dutton family as they struggle to survive historic drought, lawlessness and Prohibition, and an epidemic of cattle theft; they all fought under the cloud of Montana’s Great Depression, which preceded the country by nearly a decade,” the official show description read.
How to watch, every show, the Dutton family tree and more in the Yellowstone universe
The Dutton family’s journey across the plains to Montana was chronicled in 1883, along with the story of how they eventually settled there as opposed to their intended destination of Oregon. James (Tim McGraw) and Margaret’s (Faith Hill) teenage daughter, Elsa (Isabel May), was wounded by a Lakota dart in the liver before James and Margaret could travel all the way to the Pacific Northwest. James took her to a beautiful valley in Montana where she died; the valley later became Dutton’s farm. John, Elsa’s younger brother, apparently grew up to honor his sister and carry on the Dutton name, but that aspect of the story is still unclear and is expected to be revealed in 1923.
Trailers from 1923
The fourth episode of Yellowstone Season 5 was when the full trailer for 1923 debuted, giving us a much better understanding of the plot of the upcoming series. In 1923, the Dutton family has a foothold on their ranch, but they find themselves in yet another “distance war” as developers, cowboys, and hunters all seem to want a piece of the same territory. And while you might think it’s a bad idea to have to fight Harrison Ford for a few acres, it’s nothing compared to the wrath that Cara, played by Helen Mirren, seems capable of inflicting on anyone who opposes her.
During the opening of Yellowstone’s fifth season, the first teaser trailer for 1923 was released. In addition to showing viewers Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford in the Yellowstone universe for the first time, the teaser also had a voiceover that sounded pretty familiar. The new series was introduced by 1883’s Elsa (Isabel May), who narrated a montage of several thrilling gunfights and suspenseful incidents, while noting that the Duttons have always been cursed with or followed by violence.
