Dick van Patten
By the time he reached Eight is Enough, after beginning his career in the 1930s, Dick had a wide variety of acting credits. After the show, he made a host of TV movies and cameo appearances, as well as about a dozen appearances in major motion pictures. Dick, 86, died on June 23, 2015 from complications related to diabetes.
Diana Hyland
Diana dated John Travolta when she played Joan Bradford on the first season of Eight is Enough. She also had breast cancer, which developed despite a mastectomy and took her own life on March 27, 1977 at the age of 41.

Betty took on the role of the late Diana Hyland as a new character who married Tom Bradford for seasons 2 through 5 of Eight is Enough. Susan only appeared in The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, Chips, One Day at a Time and the 1987 movie Soldiers of Innocence after Eight is Enough and the reunion movies.
