The Rig ending explained
The crew members became infected by the spores floating in the ‘fog’, with varying consequences. Rose discovered that spores in the ashes can mix with humans as hosts. For the unhealthy person, it can cause a horrible and bloody death. While for others it can give healing properties and give them visions. Baz and Fulmer both fell under spell, while Leck was unlucky and killed when the spores tried to possess him. It spread. Rose, Magnus and Fulmer undertake a mission to communicate with the ancestor. But they struggled with time, as the drilling of the Rig had caused a monumental tsunami along the way.
Coake, another character, tries to secure a helicopter so he can escape. Rose, Magnus and Fulmer gave up their efforts and joined him. They rose from the platform in time as the wave slammed above. Baz, feeling a close connection with the Old One, remembered to sacrifice himself. Among the Lost-style monsters and supernatural elements, there’s a thematic connection to the climate catastrophe that runs through The Rig. In the final moments of the show, we could notice Cat’s wife watching as an eerie shadow pointing to her window. The Tsunami appeared to be heading for mainland Scotland. The audience could see the helicopter descend to an unknown spot with even more damage.
