Joshimath residents are seeking appropriate compensation before the damaged homes are demolished

A large number of police officers along with SDRF and NDRF personnel were deployed on Tuesday to help the demolition run smoothly, but locals rejected the administration’s request to evacuate buildings.

Two JCBs, a large crane and two dump trucks along with 60 workers were employed to demolish two hotels – Malari Inn and Mount View – which were leaning towards each other. But due to heavy protests, the demolition could not start until late in the evening. However, water, electricity and telephone lines were removed from the area by the administration.

The affected residents are demanding ‘proper’ rehabilitation and compensation. They said they will not leave buildings until the government does not give them proper compensation and rehabilitation.

In support of the affected people, villagers also reached Joshimath and went in procession.
