How did Anita Pointer from The Pointers Sister do? Her cause of death under investigation
Anita Pointer, one of four members of The Pointer Sisters, has died of cancer at the age of 74. The sad news was confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter on Dec. 31 by Roger Neal, Pointer’s publicist. Neal said, “She fought a very brave battle against cancer. “She died surrounded by family.”
Jazz, R&B, pop, country, and other genres were all prominent in the broad body of work of the Pointer Sisters, who first rose to prominence in the 1970s. One of their biggest hits, “I’m So Excited”, became known through the episode “Saved By The Bell” in which Jessie Spano developed a caffeine addiction and the movie “Summer Lovers” (via The Ringer). The sisters dominated the charts and won many awards, including three Grammys, in addition to permeating the media of the 1980s and 1990s. While each member of the group contributed equally, Pointer has been credited with writing some of the group’s most well-known songs, such as “Fairytale,” which made them the first black group to perform on the Grant Ole Opry (via Rolling Stone).
Pointer attempted a solo career in 1987, but her album “Love For What It Is” achieved only modest success. Nevertheless, she performed with the band’s original members into the 2000s. With only one Pointer sister left, Pointer’s passing marks the end of an era for The Pointer Sisters.
Anita Pointer is the third Pointer Sister to die
According to Britannica, June Pointer and Bonnie Pointer were the original members of The Pointer Sisters. But in the 1970s, Anita Pointer and Ruth Pointer formed the famous quartet together. Bonnie attempted to go solo in 1977, which nearly led to the band’s dissolution. The Associated Press was informed by Anita that “We were crushed” (via Richmond Freedom Press). “The night she left, we put on a show, but then we just stopped. Without Bonnie, we thought it wouldn’t work.” As their career progressed, the slimmed down lineup actually outperformed its sister in terms of success.
Sadly, the youngest Pointer sibling, June, passed away from cancer in 2006 at the age of 52, according to spokesperson. According to People, Bonnie Pointer died at the age of 69 after going into cardiac arrest 14 years later. Anita released a statement at the time which read as follows: “My dearest friend Bonnie and I used to talk often. Never in our lives have we had a fight. I miss her already, but one day I will see her again.” Anita’s family has issued a heartfelt message about her reunion with her late sisters and late daughter Jada Harper in light of her passing. According to CNN, the statement said, “While we are extremely saddened by the loss of Anita, we are comforted to know that she is now with her daughter Jada and her sisters June and Bonnie and is at peace.”
